About the Fishing
Islas Los Roques consists of 40-50 major islands located 92 miles north of Caracas. If you count all of the small islets and coral outcroppings in the area, there are over 300 islands in the chain, something that puts the potential size of the fishing area into perspective. While some of the flats are quite large and reminiscent of something you might find in the Bahamas, most are 70-100 feet wide with very little coral and a good amount of turtle grass – ideal for wading. The flats are healthy and loaded with baitfish, and the tides normally fluctuate less than a foot per day. The number of tailing bonefish found on the pancake flats and “classic” bonefish flats of Los Roques can be astounding. Other times, anglers can expect to walk and wade the beaches, looking for large, cruising bonefish that travel in pairs or small schools feeding on minnows and baitfish. The area also offers a number of shallow lagoons that at times can provide exceptional action for cruising, deeper-water bonefish. These lagoons are primarily fished during high tide stages when other flats are too deep for the best fishing. It is not unusual for anglers fishing Los Roques to catch between 10 and 20 bonefish per day. Most bonefish on Los Roques will average 4 pounds, and larger fish are quite common. Although Los Roques is primarily a bonefish destination, you may encounter other species as well. Be prepared with a second rod, fully rigged for cruising barracuda, tarpon, jacks, permit, or mackerel.

New version of Crazy Charlie
7/12/2009 9:36:11 AM - Simon Y.
I have been to Los Roques twice, both times in October,1st trip Oct 06. The flats fishing is very good, the shoals of minnows are incredible along the beachfront.
Those big Bones just loved my own fly especially the Silver version, they even picked it up static off the bottom!!! 1st year guides were skeptical...2nd year the wanted the flies themselves....
The Sparkler Charlie
publication date: Nov 26, 2006
by Simon Young.....
This fly came about after I read an article in a US magazine about anglers spinning for bonefish......
It occurred to me that a very bright version of the proven Crazy Charlie could be tried.
Several samples were tied, both in the silver/pearl and gold/pearl versions, and these were given to friends who were going to the Bahamas for bonefish.......
They proved a great success, particularly the gold version. So much so that on two different trips the guides were asking where the flies came from and could they have some more!.......
The dressing........
Hook: Size 6 or 8 Tiemco TMC 811S....
Thread: Tan or white 6/0 Unithread.....
Eyes: Gold or silver dumbells.......
Underbody: 1 strand of silver or gold holographic tinsel in open turns......
Overbody: Wound clear vinyl rib touching turns super glued over.....
Wing: A mix of gold or silver tinsel with pearl flashabou.......
Hint: I always tie in the wing and fold it back on itself for added durability........
You will also notice that I also put a small amount of 2 pack epoxy in front of the eyes - this
prevents the fly snagging on coral or stones............COMMENTS FROM BLACK FLY...................
Simon, thank you for your post.....We haven't had the time to tie this exact fly but if you're leaving for Los Roques next week you could probably get away with using the Chili Pepper, D.L.s Gold Bug, Bully Fly or a Christmas Island Special in Gold. See the post below for the other flies.

Hot flies for Los Roques
5/9/2009 3:35:21 PM - D.L. G.
A GROUP OF FRIENDS OF MINE JUST RETURNED FROM FISHING AT LOS ROQUES AND REPORTED THAT THE HOT FLIES FOR BONEFISH WERE "D.L.'S STEALTH FLY", "THE BULLY FLY" AND ANOTHER FLY THAT HAS BEEN ON FIRE IN THE BAHAMAS AND THE FLORIDA KEYS IS "D.L.'S GOLD BUG". FOR THE BEST RESULTS TIE YOUR BONEFISH FLY ON WITH A LOOP KNOT RATHER THAN A CLINCH KNOT, IT GIVES A MORE NATURAL ACTION TO THE FLY AS IT RISES AND FALLS...... D.L.GODDARD

Winter in Los Roques
2/25/2009 12:59:22 AM - Matti M.
I fished the archipelago of Los Roques with sight cast outfitters a few years back and they were the best. Chris, the owner of the operation will do everything and anything in his power to make your stay comfortable and productive. We fished earlier in the season, towards the end of February, and were hit with some nasty storms - the guides put us on some great fishing everyday! Large bones, Cudas, Tarpon - you name it - they found them. I can't wait to go back. The best flies for the bones were #1 and #2, Gotcha clousers. Tied like a clouser but in Gotcha colors. I have also heard that the gummy minnow has been extremely successful on large bones and tarpon.
The food was plentiful and delicious. Do not miss the pancake flats of Los Roques!
